Spartans suffer 5-4 opening day loss to O’Dea

It’s no fun to lose. It’s really no fun to lose to your rivals.

It’s no fun to lose.

It’s really no fun to lose to your rivals.

It’s really, really no fun to lose to your rivals on opening day.

It’s really, really, really no fun to lose to your rivals on opening day when you spent most of the game ahead.

Clearly, the Spartans were not having much fun Tuesday.

The opening day game against O’Dea — rescheduled from March 18 due to poor field conditions — left the Bainbridge High varsity baseball team with its third straight loss and a 1-3 overall season record after suffering a 5-4 come-from-behind defeat at the hands of the visitors Tuesday.

The Spartans led early and maintained the lead until the last at bat for the Fighting Irish, when the guests pulled into the top spot for the first time.

“They did a good job of generating momentum there when their dugout started yelling,” said Spartan Head Coach Simon Pollack. “I think that got us on our heels just a touch, which is something that we need to control.

“We need to be able to compartmentalize and just be doing the job that’s right in front of us,” he said.

Opening day jitters, Pollack said, may also have contributed to the loss of focus in the game’s final innings.

“Closing out games is hard, especially against a rival,” he said. “As soon as a rival starts to gain momentum, because they’re rivals and because the game means more, you automatically start to tighten and be concerned with what’s about to happen and I feel like that concern turned into a lack of assertiveness.

“We made some physical mistakes,” he added. “I think some of those physical mistakes were manifestations of a mental space that wasn’t firmly focused and aggressive and that caused us a problem.”
