The Bainbridge High varsity boys basketball team brought home a win in their season debut on the road against Sumner High Saturday, Nov. 30. The final score was 53-41 Bainbridge.

Spartan Head Coach Scott Orness said the game got off to a rough start at first, but the team came together quickly.

“During the first half both teams were working out their first game jitters with many missed shots and fumbled balls,” he said. “The close game was broke open in the third quarter by a 20-12 run by Bainbridge with a balanced scoring attack.”

The standout performance of the game belonged to freshman player Lyle Terry.

“Terry debuted in his first high school game with 16 points to lead all scorers, shooting 6-for-8 from the field,” Orness said. “Terry also contributed five rebounds and two blocks.”

The win was made even more significant considering Sumner’s record last season.

“Sumner made it to state in 2A last season and returned all of their key players,” Orness said.

He credited the Spartans’ success in this first game to the experience of several returning players and the excitement of the new guys.

“Bainbridge returns all of their key players as well as some influential newcomers,” he said.

The BHS top scorers were Terry (16), Ben Beatie (9), Oskar Dieterich (8), Joey Blacker (7), Trent Schulte (5), Riley Irish (3), Blake Swanson (3) and Dawson Gonwick (2).

The Spartans play their next game on the road against Chief Sealth High at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.
