BAINBRIDGE – The Spartans were so good at home Wednesday that it was almost boring.

The Bainbridge High girls varsity basketball team breezed their way to a 61-26 win over visiting Nathan Hale and continually outplayed the Raiders in almost every facet of the game.

From an almost immediate three-pointer by Taylor Tye with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter, to the commanding 28-15 lead they boasted at the end of the first half, the game was a Spartan affair all the way.

Never one to put too much stock in a single game — regardless of the outcome — Spartan Head Coach Nicole Hebner stoically said that despite the win, Wednesday’s game was not the team’s best showing this season.

“It wasn’t our best basketball that we’ve played all year,” she said. “But we’ll take a win when we can get one.”

The win elevated the team’s overall season record to 4-7. They will face off away against West Seattle Friday, Jan. 16.

West Seattle on the road Friday, Jan. 16.

“We sort of take every game day-to-day,” Hebner said, explaining that she works to ensure the team never becomes complacent, regardless of their opponent. “We don’t try to look at a team’s win/loss record.”

“Some teams can come in with their 0-8 records and they’re going to win sometimes,” she added. “I think the other team came in ready to play and we kind of started slow. One of their guards took some shots, kind of caught us off-guard a little bit, so we had to sort of work our way back into it.”

All that being said, whatever respite the Nathan Hale matchup may have allotted them, Hebner explained, would be short-lived, as the Spartans now set about the task of preparing for a series of potentially brutal matches against some of the biggest names in the Metro League.

“We’ve got three tough games,” she said of the upcoming calendar. “We got West Seattle on Friday, Chief Sealth next week’s going to be a really tough game.”

“We still have Blanchet,” she continued. “We still have Lakeside to play. They’re all ranked in the top 10. We’ve got some tough opponents next.”

Come rain or shine, however, Hebner said that the playing experience will only better prepare the Spartans for later season scrapes.

“It gets us ready for playoffs,” she said.

The team returns to Bainbridge to host Chief Sealth at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Their next home game is not scheduled until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, when they will host Lakeside.
