The Bainbridge Spartans girls soccer team responded to a tough loss to Central Kitsap earlier in the week by handling the Olympic Trojans 7-0 at home Sept. 11, earning its first Olympic League win of the season.
The Spartans (1-1, 1-0 in OL) fell to CK 2-1 Sept. 9 while the Trojans (1-1, 0-1 in OL) beat the Clover Park Timberwolves 2-1 the same day.
“You want these games to be building blocks for…other games for us to get ready for,” Bainbridge coach Katie Drovdahl said. “Like North Kitsap and you know, some of these other rivalries.”
The Spartans got on the board early with a quick score from junior Siri Smith within the first four minutes of play, setting the tempo early for Bainbridge.
Olympic managed to get the ball into Bainbridge territory and keep it there for the following eight minutes, but couldn’t generate any scores while attempting a plentiful amount of shots on goal. Bainbridge sophomore Magdalena Rufo-Hill capitalized on a breakaway, carrying the ball into Trojan territory by herself and putting in another score for the Spartans.
Bainbridge continued their onslaught with two more goals from freshman Inez Gerbeck and sophomore Isabella Saint Clair, giving the Spartans a convincing 5-0 lead entering halftime.
“We’re high press all the time,” Bainbridge senior Maggie Dunstan said. “I think that was one thing we really wanted to work on [coming into this game].”
The Spartans continued their scoring ways in the second half with senior Taylor Mass earning a penalty kick and scoring another goal for Bainbridge, increasing the lead to 6-0.
Gerbeck found the back of the net again, scoring her second goal of the day and giving Bainbridge a seven-goal lead.
“Every year we open up with Bainbridge and North [Kitsap],” Olympic coach Steve Haggerty said. “We always play tough teams to begin with, and sometimes we’re not ready to compete with them.”
