Spartans regroup to finish third in league tournament

An emotional overtime loss to North Kitsap in the Olympic League semifinals didn’t keep the Spartans down for long. They regrouped for the tournament’s third-place game and overcame a slow start to knock off Central Kitsap 59-46.

A 20-5 second quarter run that featured scoring contributions from all five starters proved to be the difference as Bainbridge opened up a 33-17 lead. The Cougars cut the lead to 10 by halftime, but the Spartans still cruised to a 13-point victory.

“They came out a bit sluggish, but also give credit to CK – they came out with energy and were executing on offense and playing good defense,” coach Steven Haizlip said.

One player who started well was junior guard Cliff Hennessey, who knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter, picking up nearly all of his team’s points as Bainbridge led by just one at the end of the first eight minutes.

Hennessey popped in three more field goals in the second, including his fourth 3-pointer, and Jacob Kirsch chipped in five points during the key run. Andrew Ward, Alan Ulin and Alexander Treskin worked the paint to combine for eight points.

The Spartans continued to extend their lead in the third as Kirsch, Ulin and Treskin each had a pair of field goals. Bainbridge, at one point, led by as much as 15, and the defense was able to keep the Cougars at bay. Ward added two 3-pointers in the fourth. He finished the game with 12 points.

Bainbridge had a successful season in the Olympic League, finishing with an 11-3 record. Two of the three losses came against league champion North Kitsap, which was also the defending 2A state champion. Bainbridge also had a notable 58-55 win over Port Angeles, which had the No. 1 seed in the league tournament.
