MUKILTEO  – The Bainbridge Spartans had an impressive showing in girls swimming and diving at the Mukilteo Invite last weekend, and three BHS swimmers qualified for the state 3A swimming championships.

But it was Bainbridge’s Zora Opalka who once again left the crowd in stunned amazement.

Opalka won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 451.85 — a mark that sets her on the path to state but also qualifies her for All American consideration.

Her score shattered not only a school record but also set a new meet record for 11 dives.

Overall, Bainbridge finished second out of the 37 teams from across the state that competed at the Oct. 1 meet.

Spartan Hannah Tonsmann punched her ticket to the state championships in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.78. She finished fifth overall.

Tonsmann also qualified for state in the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 5:19.57. She took third place overall in the event.

Erin Miller also qualified for state in the 100-yard butterfly. She finished in third with a time of 59.95.

Opalka, a senior at BHS, learned late this week that her stellar showing at the invite had earned her “Athlete of the Week” honors from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Each week throughout the school year, the WIAA recognizes a dozen varsity athletes for outstanding performance.
