Spartans overwhelm Islanders in lacrosse

MERCER ISLAND – The Spartans saddled Mercer Island with its first loss of the season in girls varsity lacrosse late last week, and upended the Islanders in a decisive 14-7 victory on the road.

With Bainbridge’s starting goalie out, Gisella Gonzalez stepped in goal and the defensive line of Chloe Wilson, Nina Davis, Ruby Iaria and Noelle Perry tightened up to play incredibly well.

The Spartans trailed 4-3 early in the first half before pulling forward to 6-4 by halftime.

Bainbridge’s triple scoring threat of Mackenzie Chapman, Kendall Havill and Maggie Sweeney overwhelmed the Islanders. Chapman and Havill both split the posts for five goals each during the contest, while Sweeney scored four times.

Draw control was key as Chapman, Sweeney, Eleanor Collins and Eleanor King, controlled the midfield and BHS finished with 14 draws to Mercer Island’s eight. Chapman had a team-high seven draws for BHS.

Bainbridge also led in assists, with Abby Reibsamen contributing two, and teammates Havill, Sweeney and Eleanor Collins added one each.

Gonzalez picked up her first win in goal, and made three saves on 10 shots against the Spartan goal, for a save percentage of 30 percent.
