Spartans improve times in XCountry

Ballard bested Bainbridge and the rest of the pack during the Metro League’s cross country meet at Lincoln Park last week.

SEATTLE – Ballard bested Bainbridge and the rest of the pack during the Metro League’s cross country meet at Lincoln Park last week.

The 5,000-meter race featured runners from Garfield, Holy Names, O’Dea, Ingraham, Bainbridge, Ballard, Chief Sealth and Rainier Beach.

The Spartans brought a depleted squad to the meet, but Bainbridge still was able to pick up the pace.

“There was some great BIXC racing at Lincoln Park this afternoon. At least six runners improved their 5K time by more than 60 seconds,” said Spartans Head Coach Anne Howard Lindquist.

Some of the runners who improved their 5K time by more than 60 seconds included Michael Nolan, Jarod Sprott, Jordan Davis, Niki Limbachia, Sophie Carson and Michaela Leung.

Bainbridge’s top varsity runners on both men’s and women’s teams did not attend the meet. They took the day off to prepare for the Nike Pre-Nationals Invitational in Portland.

Ballard finished first in men’s team scores, with 23 points, while O’Dea was second with 61.

(A first-place runner counts for 1 point; second place, 2 points; and so on. Scores for the top five runners are combined.)

Garfield and Ingraham both scored 100 points, while Bainbridge finished with 122 points and Chief Sealth had 140.

Ballard claimed first, second and fourth places in the men’s division, with 10th-grader James Konugres winning the race in 16:36.

In the women’s competition, Ballard was first with 27 points.

Garfield was second (52), followed by Holy Names Academy (68), Ingraham (93), Bainbridge (128) and Chief Sealth (190).

Ballard’s Jamie Smith, a junior, won in the women’s division in 19:29.
