BELLEVUE – All Caleb Davis needed to do was hit his free throws, and the Bainbridge boys basketball team was off to the 3A Sea-King District 2 championship.

With a sizable crowd roaring to distract him, the junior guard stepped up, took a deep breath, made a few dribbles, and knocked down both freebies with ease with 30.9 seconds left.

Davis split another pair of free throws with 9.3 seconds left that provided the game winning points in the Spartans’ 52-51 overtime victory over the Bellevue Wolverines in a 3A Sea-King District 2 semifinal game.

The win puts Bainbridge in the district championship game for the first time in their six-year stay in the Metro League. The Spartans play the O’Dea Fighting Irish at 6 p.m. tonight at Bellevue Community College.

“I was just trying to keep it steady,” Davis said of the pressure packed moment. “We’re not in those situations a lot. We do it at practice, so luckily I was able to keep my cool and knock them down.”

Bainbridge took a 14-7 lead after the first quarter, but Bellevue outscored them 15-10 in the second quarter to go into halftime down by just four.

Head coach Scott Orness said they struggled with the Wolverines’ zone defense.

“We never see zone in the Metro League,” he said. “We need to work on our zone offense. They played smart and we struggled a little bit in recognizing.”

After a few minutes of both teams trading possessions in the third, Alex Schrempf scored to close the Spartans’ lead to just two.

But Davis hit a three pointer and Austin Wood scored inside to push their lead back out to seven.

Luke Sikma scored in the post with 4:47 left, but Wood scored on the inside again, then after Chase Anderson scored, Rudy Sharar banked in a three to put the lead up to eight.

Steven Gray scored with two minutes left, but Bellevue went on a 8-2 run in the last minute and 45 seconds to cut the lead to just two.

“They’re a good basketball team,” Orness said. “They execute well, they change their defenses up and they do a lot of things really well with the talent they have.”

In the fourth, both teams slowed everything down to maximize each possession.

Wood scored the first points of the quarter with 5:42 left in the game, but Schrempf and Sikma – the sons of former Seattle Sonics legends Detlef Schrempf and Jack Sikma – scored to tie the game up at 40.

Davis came back with another bucket, but Sikma went to work again, scoring off a jump shot in the post.

Wood then scored off a bank shot with 1:32 remaining, but Sikma came back to score on the very next play.

That was the last score of the quarter, as both teams couldn’t convert on their last possessions of regulation.

Bellevue forced a steal with 25 seconds left and immediately called timeout to set up a play.

After the Wolverines inbounded the ball, Gray and Davis combined for the trap on Austin Zeir as he came over the halfcourt line.

He tried to pass out, but had it knocked away. After a mad dash for the ball, a Wolverine player threw it to Phillip Bach out by the arc.

He was open for the three, but it was off. Gray grabbed the rebound with 3.7 seconds left and got off a shot that just glanced off the rim, wrapping up play in exactly one hour.

In overtime, the Spartans took control as they scored the first five points of the extra period.

Wood scored on the inside after some nice passes found him down low, Gray scored on a free throw after he forced a steal and Gibler scored off the inbounds play after Wood grabbed the rebound off of Gray’s miss and Bellevue knocked it out of bounds.

“We’ve been really good in close games this year,” Orness said of their success in overtime. “Those close games are what helped us (get) here.”

Sikma couldn’t be stopped though, scoring four points to close the gap to one.

But Bainbridge was able to hold on and run some time off the clock before Davis was fouled and hit his foul shots with ease.

“Caleb’s free throws at the end were huge for us,” Orness said.

The Wolverines got the ball back to Sikma, but his shot was off and went out of bounds to the Spartans as Davis and a Bellevue player were fighting for the rebound.

Davis was fouled again and split his foul shots, allowing Bach to come back and hit a three with 1.5 seconds left.

On the inbounds play, Nick Fling was fouled and sent to the line.

He missed the front end of the one-and-one, allowing Sikma to grab the rebound and throw up a prayer that went off the right side of the backboard.

“I thought that was going to go in,” Gray said. “I was right behind him and I thought” it was in.

With the win, Bainbridge (21-3) takes on O’Dea once again – this time with the district title on the line.

Gray said they’ll be ready.

“We have about five games left at the most,” he said. “There’s seven seniors that want to come out and work hard and leave it all on the floor.”

Davis had 16 points and was 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.

Gray had 11 points while Wood had 10 points and four rebounds. Gibler had 12 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks.
