Spartans earn Metro fastpitch win in girls softball

BAINBRIDGE – With a hit-heavy third inning, the Spartans jumped out to an 11-0 advantage against Roosevelt in girls varsity fastpitch softball and withstood a late rally from the Rough Riders to earn the team’s first Metro League win of the season.

The Spartans led 3-0 after the first inning, but Bainbridge bust open the game in the third with eight runs scored, including a home-run blast by Maddie Loverich over the left field fence.

It was the first homer of the season for Loverich, who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs.

The contest — somewhat of an endurance test for both teams, with sloppy field conditions, threatening rain and frigid winds — looked to be on its way to an early finish after Bainbridge built its big lead.

The Rough Riders came roaring back in the top of the fifth inning, however, with eight runs.

The Spartans scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the inning to ice the score at 12-8.

Malia Peato started on the mound for Bainbridge, with Sara Colley coming in to pitch in the third, and Olivia Wikstrom taking over in the sixth.

Colley was credited with the win and improved to 1-1.

Wikstrom figured big on both sides of the ball. She went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run, and struck out five in the two innings she pitched.

Fellow Spartan Kensey Baker went 1-for-3, with a double, two RBIs and a run.

Peato went 1-for-4, with three RBIs and a run.

Roosevelt was led by junior outfielder Julia Swanson, who was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run.

Grace Brown, the Rough Riders’ pitcher, was 2—for-4 for Roosevelt with a run.

The victory pushed Bainbridge’s record to 2-1 (1-0 Metro).
