Spartans come back for win against Patriots in girls soccer

Bainbridge beat Liberty 2-1 Saturday in Renton to open the season with a win in girls varsity soccer.

RENTON – Bainbridge beat Liberty 2-1 Saturday in Renton to open the season with a win in girls varsity soccer.

The Spartans broke a 1-1 tie in the 79th minute after Sophia Bidinger scored on a pass from Riley Gregoire.

Bainbridge got on the board first with a goal in the 58th minute by Celia Story.

Liberty answered with a score by Makena Carr in the 77th minute before Bidinger booted the game-winner two minutes later.

“Tough team,” Bainbridge Coach Scott Druker said of Liberty. “We had opportunities; they had opportunities.”

“We’re definitely comparable. Celia [Story] was able to cash in on a good opportunity; she made a good move on somebody at the top of the box and buried it in the corner. I mean, guaranteed goal, no keeper is saving it,” he said.

Druker said the Spartans got out of their rut after the Patriots scored.

“We kind of went flat and they actually took over the game for about a 10-minute lapse there, and they were able to score,” he recalled.

“We responded right away. That’s good. I think we had a couple of games last year where we did that. That’s what we’re looking for in our top players. Natalie [Vukic] did it last year, and Celia is going to be the one to do it this year.”
