BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge Spartans began the last home swim meet of the year against O’Dea in dramatic fashion: by smashing a nearly 20-year-old pool record in the 200-yard medley relay.
Garrett Waite, Kevin Houseman, Jem Bullock and Andy Yalung set the new record for the Bainbridge Aquatic Center with a stellar showing of 1:40.26 in the race.
The previous best mark of 1:40.40 was set by a visiting foursome from Seattle Prep in 1996.
And a little icing on the cake of that new record: The Spartans’ time in the 200 medley relay was a state qualifier; the 3A qualifying time in the event is 1:44.50.
The Spartans’ B relay team also had a state-worthy performance in the event. The foursome of Sam Alpaugh, Aron Markow, Makai Ingalls and Aidan Wagner finished in 1:42.74.
Bainbridge’s spectacular showings continued with the 200-yard individual medley, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Waite finished first with a state time of 2:02.55. (The 3A qualifying time is 2:03.99.)
In the 200 free relay, the team of Waite, Wagner, Parker Bushey and Ingalls won first in a state time of 1:31.62. (The 3A qualifying time in the event is 1:33.50.)
Finally, in the 100-yard breaststroke, Houseman swam a state time in 59.56. (The 3A qualifying time is 1:02.70.)
The Spartans dominated in the meet and easily won with a total team score of 106 to O’Dea’s 69.
It was a victorious end to Senior Night for the team’s departing seniors: Samuel Alpaugh, James Bullock, Gabriel Emert, Nathan Johnson, Jack Riley, Zarye Wosenne and Andrew Yalung.
But the meet didn’t end without a strong showing of sportsmanship from the Fighting Irish, who took over the microphone at the end of the Senior Night tributes to present the Spartans with a poster they’d signed in honor of the Spartans. “We’ve got your back at Metros,” they said.
