Spartan boys net another win

In another split decision, the Bainbridge Spartans took on the combined Holy Names and O’Dea tennis teams last week.

The Bainbridge boys romped, 5-0, and the girls stumbled, 0-5.

On the boys side, Eli Wagner had a strong showing at No. 1 singles and quickly dispatched Jack Hillyer 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2, Luke Hurd was victorious for Bainbridge High in his first singles match of the season and downed Adam Kures 6-1, 6-2.

In the No. 1 doubles match, the team of Jeremy Lipschutz and Maxwell Brown dominated John Misel and Cody Peterson 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 2 doubles, Aidan Sullivan partnered with Bjorn Stanley. This was Stanley’s first match of the year and his first varsity win as the pair laid down the law in a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Ty Herman and Nathan Flack.

At No. 3 doubles, Alec Chan and Kawin Nikomborirak continued their winning ways in a 6-0, 6-2 trouncing of Louis Nguyen and Stone Harmann.

On the girls side at No. 1 singles, Ellie Van Slyke fell to the tenacious play of Holy Names’ Anna Miller 2-6, 0-6. At number 2 singles, Catherine Rolfes’ determined ground strokes and consistent play did note quite break through the artful shot making of Abby Miller. Rolfes lost 3-6, 4-6.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Marianne Milander and Mallory Browne played some excellent points but could not string them together against the cohesive play of the talented team of Megan Skrobut and Christine Barton.

Sophia Scott and Mollie Alpaugh were outplayed by Erin Skrobut and Olivia Battison 0-6, 1-6.

The Spartans came closest to breaking through for a win on the girls side in the No. 3 doubles match, where Katie Hughes and Morgan Wickline took on Joanna Noffsinger and Elena Galati. Hughes and Wickline lost the first set 4-6, but regrouped adjusted strategies and prevailed in the second set, 7-5. In lieu of a third set with the light fading, the teams opted for a 10-point tie-breaker. The Cougars’ more aggressive play during the tie-breaker overcame the determined defense of the Spartans who dropped the breaker and the match, 4-10.
