The Spartans ended their girls basketball season with an edge-of-seat thriller against Juanita in the Sea-King 3A District Tournament Saturday.

The Rebels won, 53-47, in a game much more on the edge than the final score shows.

It teetered the Spartans’ way for a long time near the end of the fourth, and even when that last-stanza see-saw started to tilt the Rebels’ way, Bainbridge bounced back.

The Spartans pulled to within one point, 48-47 with 1:52 left to play, but Bainbridge couldn’t get the shot they needed to seal the deal. A three-pointer from the corner came up short, and Juanita ran out the clock for the win.

“We played hard,” said Bainbridge Coach Nicole Hebner.“ Bot h teams played hard and wanted to win. It could have gone either way.”

“I’m not disappointed in the kids at all,” Hebner added. “I’m proud of them.”

Grace Kenyon scored 34 points for the Spartans, just three points shy of the single-game scoring record set by Wendy Clark, who played for the Spartans in 1992-96. Kenyon tied for second place on the all-time single-game scoring list with Brittany Gray.

Julie Feikes finished with six, Sydney Severson added four. Paige Brigham added two, and Maddie Ketcheside had one.
