Local tumblers perform well in meets

Island sports briefs.

EDIT to add: These are the gymnasts that are competing in the Men’s Sectionals in Boise: Alex Cohen, David Hoffman, Nathaniel Opalski, Bryan Peterson, Alex Powell, Glenn Runnels and Ben Self.

The Bainbridge Island Gymnastics Club is winding down their season, but not without some success.

The boys competed in the 2007 Washington State Men’s state meet at the Lakewood YMCA on the weekend of March 17.

In the Level 4 category, Henry Brown, Collin Hansen, Kenny Powers and Sean Sell all competed.

Powers finished second on the pommel horse and third on parallel bars. He finished fourth in the all-around competition.

Sell finished first on the floor, third on the pommel horse and on the rings and finished fourth on the parallel bars.

He placed fifth in the all-around competition.

In the Level 5 category, Nathaniel Opalski took home first place finishes on the pommel horse, the rings and the high bar.

He finished third in the all-around score.

Alex Cohen was first on the vault and finished in ninth place in the all-around score while David Hoffman was second on the parallel bars, third on the pommel horse and the vault.

He finished in tenth in the all-around competition.

In the Level 6 category, Alex Powell tied for fifth in the rings and the high bars while Peterson took home a fourth place finish on the high bar.

Ben Self finshed second on the pommel horse and fourth on the rings, giving him a fourth place finish in the all-around competition.

In the Level 7 category, Glenn Runnels was the lone gymnast for the BIGC.

He finished third on the pommel horse, fourth on the vault and tied for seventh in the all-around competition with a score of 49.10.

The girls finished their last meet for the regular season in Lacey March 17.

Rachel Kaminer was named most valuable gymnast for the Level 7 team.

She earned 9.0 and higher in all four events, finishing fourth in the all-around competition with a total score of 36.75.

Kaminer placed second on the floor exercise with a 9.525 and placed fourth on the balance beam and the vault with scores of 9.175 and 9.05, respectively.

Marielle Summers was named most valuable gymnast for the level 5 team, earning an all-around score of 35.25.

Miller Shor scored 35.1 points in the all-around competition while Sarah Rice scored 34.9 points, Grace Allen scored 34.5 points, Chloe Seferos scored 33.35 points and Alexis Trussell scored 33.05 points.

The girls team moves on to their sectionals meet April 15 in Federal Way while the boys team heads to Boise, Idaho for the men’s regional meet April 14-15.

BISC does well in sectionals

The Bainridge Island Swim Club had a good day at the 2007 Northwest Section Western Zone Short Course Age Group Championships last weekend at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Spencer Alpaugh took home a first place finish in the boys’ 500 yard freestyle for the 11-year-old age group.

Todd McCarthy finished second in the 100 backstroke for the 11-year-old age group, while Andrew McCarthy finished second in the 500 freestyle for the 12-year-old age group.

He also set a new club record with his time of 2:00.78 in the 200 freestyle.

Marcus Tonsmann was seventh in the 200 freestyle for the 10 and under age group while C.J. Waite was tenth in the 100 breaststroke for the 10 and under age group.

In the medley relay, the team of Sam Alpaugh, Waite, Jack Peirano and Tonsmann finished in fifth with a time of 2:27.87 while the free relay team of Tonsmann, Waite, Peirano and Bret Baldwin finished in the eighth spot with a time of 2:08.37.

For the girls, the 200 medley relay team of Natalie Ackerley, Anna Peirano, Kim Williams and Mikelle Ackerley finished in third with a time of 2:22.06.

Ultimate earns their first win

The Bainbridge Ultimate Frisbee team posted their first official win of the year this past Saturday, defeating the team from Nova High School in Shoreline by a one-point margin.

Led by senior captain Tim Nguyen and “the girls” of 2008, the Killa Bees played outstanding defense and were able to get their offense flowing enough to outscore their opponent for the 11-10 win.
