Kitsap schools finish atop the North Mason Classic

Kitsap County girls wrestling teams kicked off the North Mason Classic tournament Dec. 27.

The tournament consisted of four wrestlers at a catchweight, a weight limit that does not adhere to traditional weight classes.

Although the girls did not compete for team points, several local wrestlers came home with medals.

Olympic’s team had the most success with their four wrestlers. Gloria Hudson had three pins in a combined time of three minutes, claiming a first-place title. Ali Templeton also picked up three pins and a first-place medal in the 121-126 bracket. Trojans Ireland Beck and Haley Schaser tied for second with 2-1 records.

Central Kitsap had the deepest team in the tournament, earning seven total medals out of nine wrestlers. Angel Cartagena and Skyler Macdonald finished second in the lightweight brackets after going 2-1. Chloe Marcotte, Amaia Martinez, Deija Diego, Abi Kesti and Alyssa Anderson captured third-place medals after going 1-2 in the round-robin brackets.

Klahowya had mixed results with their four wrestlers. Mya Young finished first with a 3-0 record in the 117-119 bracket. In addition, Linley Wolford-Henry captured a second-place finish after going 2-1 in the 140-146 bracket. On the other hand, Audrey Younger and Phoebe Brolliar were winless.

All three Bainbridge wrestlers came home with a medal. Alex Morrison finished second with a 2-1 record, Natalie Noel finished third with a 1-2 record, and Sage Waley finished second despite going 0-2.

Boys tourney

Bainbridge did not compete in the boys tournament, which used a traditional format.

But North Kitsap led the way with a second-place finish with 192 points. The Vikings had the largest squad there with 23.

Four Viking wrestlers had a perfect tournament. Morgan Scott Paul, Ben Gomez, Zakaria Hammou and Sofian Hammou picked up 110 team points and nine pins during the tourney.

Jaxon Johnson finished second in the 138-pound class, Jake Poggi finished third in the 160-pound division, and Marquise Vestal and Andy Jezek captured fourth in the 195- and 220-pound divisions.

Central Kitsap fell one point behind the Vikings. The Cougars dominated in the lighter divisions. Nate Cronin, Quentin Lawrence and Levi Beebe had eight pins and two technical falls as well as capturing first place in their lightweight classes.

Plus, Tristyn Nelson and Carter Chadwick both went 3-1 and finished third in their lightweight classes. Only two Cougars placed in the heavier weight classes. 152-pound Chrisitan Cartagena went 2-1 and earned second place while heavyweight Joma Robert went 3-1 and finished third.

Although Klahowya only had three wrestlers finish on the podium, the team finished seventh with 78 points. Eagle Carson Wintch went 2-1 and finished third in the 113-pound division. Deacon Wintch finished third in the 120-pound class after going 3-1. At 160 pounds Logan Wallis went 2-1, finishing second in his division.
