Ingalls qualifies again for state in boys swimming

“Ironman: The Sequel” arrived just in time for the Metro League Championships in boys swimming and diving.

Bainbridge High’s Makai Ingalls swam a state-qualifying time in the 200-yard individual medley in last week’s meet against Ingraham.

Ingalls’ first-place finish in the 200 IM — 1:58.42 — gave him his eighth state qualifying time, earning him the title of “ironman.”

The standout Spartan swimmer is the second this season to claim “ironman” status.

Teammate Garrett Waite picked up ironman honors after notching a 3A state mark in the 100-yard breaststroke last month against Bishop Blanchet.

The two Spartans are the first for the boys team to swim all eight events — and earn “ironman” status — since Andrew McCarthy in 2012.

(The Spartan girls team need not look back so far in history for its own “ironman,” as Shayla Archer also raced to the honor in 2012 and in 2013.)

The Spartan boys easily corralled the Rams in their final meet of the regular season, winning with a team score of 135-48.

The meet was a lopsided affair, with BHS taking first, second and third place in six of the 11 races.

Also noteworthy: Waite again had a 3A state time in the 100-yard backstroke.

He placed first in the race with a time of 54.66.

The 3A state qualifying time in the event is 56.50.

Next up for Bainbridge, the Metro Championship preliminaries on Friday, Feb. 3 at the Snohomish Aquatic Center, followed by the championship finals on Saturday, Feb. 4.
