Hughes and Wickline power way to win

BAINBRIDGE – The Lions kept their unbeaten streak intact late last week as Lakeside triumphed in varsity tennis over Bainbridge on both the boys and girls side.

On the boys side, Maxwell Brown made his first appearance of the season at No. 1 singles but was outmatched by Eli Fonseca and lost 0-6, 1-6.

At No. 2 singles the match was more competitive as Jeremy Lipschutz battled with a tough left-hander in the form of Alan Fan.

Lipschuzt had a number of games go to deuce, but dropped the first set 3-6. Fan seemed to raise the level of his play in the second set and to put away his Spartan counterpart, 0-6.

In No. 1 doubles, Aidan Sullivan and Eli Wagner fell to Jack Delafield and Hayden Clark 2-6, 4-6.

At No. 2 doubles, Alec Chan and Kawin Nikomborirak dropped two straight sets to Matt Holloman and Allan Land in a 4-6, 2-6 loss.

At No. 3 doubles, Ryan Wilson and Asher Van Slyke were felled 1-6, 3-6 as Lakeside completed the sweep of the Bainbridge boys.

On the girls side at No. 1 singles, Ellie Van Slyke was outplayed by Viv Daniel 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 2 singles, Sophia Scott had one of the longest 0-6, 0-6 losses recorded as she traded seemingly endless ground stroke rallies with Tembi Karagiaies but almost always came away on the losing end.

In No. 1 doubles, Marianne Milander and Mallory Browne kept things close, but not close enough as they lost 3-6, 4-6 to Kate Delafield and Emma Silbes.

Annika Claudio and Molly Alpaugh fell to Cheyenne Zhang and Sophie Lee 2-6, 3-6.

The silver-lining match of the day was completed by Katie Hughes and Morgan Wickline against Francis Thyer and Jenny Beinardez in the No. 3 doubles spot. Lakeside had already swept the first nine matches of the day when Hughes and Wickline stole the lone victory for the Spartans in dramatic fashion. They won the first set 6-1 with seeming ease when Thyer and Beinardez cleaned up their play. The second set was competitive, playing on serve at 3-4, Thyer had her serve broken to allow the Spartans to serve for the match at 5-3. The Lions fought back and broke Wickline’s serve and evened the score at 5-5.

Hughes and Wickline faced the possibility of a third set, but collected themselves, held Hughes’ serve and broke Thyer again for the 7-5 set and match win.
