BAINBRIDGE – The Bulldogs escaped with two wins in varsity tennis late last week as Garfield’s talented boys side was too much for the Spartans while the Bainbridge girls team came tantalizingly close to notching their first win of the season.
On the boys side at No. 1 singles, Bainbridge’s Eli Wagner fell to Nick Bishop in two hard-fought sets 4-6, 6-7 (5-7).
Maxwell Brown was overmatched by the left-handed play of Garfield’s August Knox 6-4, 6-1, in No. 2 singles.
In No. 1 doubles Aidan Sullivan and Jeremy Lipschutz had a decidedly off day falling in straights sets 0-6, 2-6 to Andrew Silver and Mitch Batlisa. In the No. 2 doubles spot, Mason Ogden and Kristian Magrini came up short in a three-set battle, losing the first set 2-6, battling back in the second set and winning it in a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-3), but dropping a break and the match 4-6 in the third set to Ben Ferry and Jack Holt.
Kawin Nikomborirak and Alec Chan were the lone victors on the boys side, winning in the No. 3 doubles spot by dominating Ryan Lock and Mike Loughran 6-0, 6-1.
On the girls side Ellie Van Slyke was crushing Sakusa Kishito 6-0, 3-0, when Kishitio defaulted because of injury.
At No. 2 singles, Catherine Rolfes lost a marathon match 6-7, 2-6 to Eva Holt.
At No. 1 doubles, Marianne Milander and Mallory Browne were up a set and two breaks at 6-3, 5-2, when Ava Zech and Olena Bova went on a hot streak to take the next eight games in a row. With the score at 0-3 in the third, Milander and Browne dug in their heels and won the next four games in a row. But then the momentum switched again and Bova and Zech closed out the third set 6-4 by winning the last three games.
In No. 2 doubles Morgan Wickline and Katie Hughes lost 4-6, 4-6 to Arissa Lee and Liz Bui.
At No. 3 doubles Annika Claudio and Mollie Alpaugh cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Emma Cooper and Lulu Cangle.
The losses dropped the Spartan boys overall record to 3-2 and the girls overall record to 0-5.
