Bourland signs with Western Washington

Bainbridge High School senior Anna Bourland has signed a national letter of intent to compete for Western Washington University’s golf team beginning in the fall of 2010.

Bourland, a four-time first team all-Metro League selection, led the Spartans to a second-place finish at state in 2009, and placed eighth individually.

Bourland narrowed her choices down to Gonzaga and Western Washington, but ultimately decided to sign with the Vikings.

The biggest factor?

“Mostly the weather,” she said. “It’s kind of hard to play golf when it’s snowing half the year.”

Bourland is considering majoring in business at Western.

“I went an official visit and I stayed with one of the girls on the team, and went to a couple of her classes,” Bourland said. “I really liked the coach, and I liked the school.”

Currently, Western is ranked 14th in the NCAA Division II poll.

“They go to Nationals and do really well — that’s another factor,” she said.

But before Bourland heads to Western, the Spartan girls will compete in the district tournament — on their quest to state — in May.

“I think we’re going to do pretty well bring a couple of girls to state,” Bourland said.
