Biggers signs with St. Mary’s for lacrosse

Senior was an All-American last season.

It’s been a long process, but Jaclyn Biggers will continue her lacrosse career in college.

The senior recently signed a letter of intent for St. Mary’s College, a Division I school in Moraga, Calif.

“It’s a relief now that it’s all set,” she said. “It’s really nice. I’m excited.”

Biggers said she chose St. Mary’s over six other schools such as the University of Cal-Berkley, UC-Davis, the University of Oregon, the University of Denver and Stanford. All those schools play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for women’s lacrosse. Other schools that were looking at her according to her dad, Ray, were Notre Dame, the University of Florida and the University of Vermont.

“I had visited some of the other schools and it just didn’t click for me,” she said. “I had been talking with the coach [at St. Mary’s] for a while, but I didn’t really know anything about [the program.]

“I went for an official visit to St. Mary’s earlier this year and [the team] has really good chemistry and it’s in an awesome location,” Biggers continued. “It’s a competitive team, but they get along real well and have fun.”

She said another key was knowing several players on the team. They include her former teammates at Bainbridge in Delaney Larkin and Mariah Walk and former rivals in Mercer Island’s Caroline Mahony and Forest Ridge’s Jillian Chong.

The program at St. Mary’s is relatively new, as it was created in 2000. They haven’t had a winning record in their time as a program, with their best mark coming in 2003 when they went 8-9. Last season they were 4-12.

The Gaels get a talented player in Biggers, who was selected as an All-American last year as a junior, which was the first time in school history an underclassman received that honor. She was also named to the all-state first team.

Biggers was second in the state with 6.75 points per game and she set a new state record for draw controls with 102. She’s helped the Spartans to the state championship finals in her three years on the team.

Biggers is a two-time state regional team selection and helped Washington win a division title at the U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament last May in Maryland. She was also selected as the top midfielder at the Adrenaline Showcase in California, which hosts the top 60 players west of the Mississippi each year.

Biggers said she has tentative plans to study either communications or sports management, but does plan to stay in the San Francisco area after she graduates.

She’s favored to earn another all-state and All-American award for this season, but Biggers said she wants to leave Bainbridge with a title.

“We have a really strong lineup coming back,” she said. “The awards are flattering, but I would do anything to win state.

“After three years of (losing to) Lakeside, it would be so nice to graduate with a state title.”
