Bainbridge Island Rowing Men’s Masters Eight oar crew defeated five other club crews from Seattle and Tacoma in the Husky Open Rowing Regatta in Seattle on Saturday, April 1.
The winning crew included Brandon Fleet (bow), Marc Stewart (seat two), Tim Goss (three), Bill McGonagle (four), Don Fannon (five), Kurt Frost (six), John Christiansen (seven), Mark Olason (stroke) and Genevieve Sawyer (cox).
In this first rowing regatta of the 2017 spring rowing season, Bainbridge defeated Commencement Bay, Ancient Mariners 1 and 2, the Lake Washington Rowing Club and the Mount Baker Rowing Club.
The Husky Open is sponsored by the University of Washington, and features more than 983 participants in 40 events.
The races were a distance of 2,000 meters over the Montlake Cut course in Lake Washington, starting from Webster Point West under the Mountlake Bridge and ending in Portage Bay.
Two other Bainbridge crews also competed, in the Women’s Masters Eight and Mixed Eight, finishing fourth and second.
Nicholai Otte, coach of the Bainbridge crews, said that the better weather and longer days will improve training and expects all boats will be faster for the next regatta, on April 22 in Eugene, Oregon.
