The Bainbridge High boys varsity soccer team returned to the island from their third postseason match last Friday at Interbay Stadium in Seattle, having secured for themselves the third place spot in the Metro League in a thrilling 3-2 OT win over perennial powerhouse Lakeside.

This contest again saw OT play and a penalty kick shootout, and was a heated finale to a scrappy match.

“Sam Casad scored the winning penalty kick for Bainbridge,” said Spartan Head Coach Ian McCallum.

BHS goalie Devon Reynolds saved two shots during the PK shootout.

BHS goals were scored by Mario Vukic, with an assist by Casad, and also by Gerrit Mahling, with an assist by Glodi Kingombe.

Bainbridge scored first with just under 27 minutes left in the first half.

Then, with less than two minutes remaining before the break, Lakeside evened things up 1-all and the game entered its second half tied.

The Spartans scored again almost immediately upon returning to the field (with nearly 29 minutes left in the match) to retake the lead, though once again the Lions came back and tied the match with just over 18 minutes to go, leaving the game bound for OT.

The Spartans would advance to the first round of state tournament play Wednesday against Glacier Peak at Snohomish High School Stadium.

The final matches are set for Saturday, May 30 at Sparks Stadium.

Bainbridge entered the postseason with an overall record of 13-3-3, then won the first playoff match and lost the second before squaring up against Lakeside last week.

Mahling leads the team offensively, having scored seven goals in the regular season.

Kingombe stands in second place with six, though he does lead in the team in assists (four).

Goalie duties throughout the season have been split between Reynolds and Huma Gisbet.
