SEABROOK, Texas – The Bainbridge High School sailing team took 11th place overall in the recent ISSA Baker National Team Racing Championship event in Seabrook, Texas.

Bainbridge High School qualified as one of 12 teams out of 471 to vie for the Baker Trophy.  Team Captains Carissa Block and Connor Juckniess, with Nels Challinor, Geoff Brelsford, Stasi Burzycki, Jackson McCoy, Hannah Harrison, and Will Brown acquitted themselves well against teams from throughout the United States, including sailing powerhouses from California, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Florida.

The schools competed in double-handed dinghies in a 3-versus-3 format that emphasizes tactics and knowledge of sailing rules, as well as great boat handling and boat speed.

BHS, coached by volunteer Susie Kaseler with assistant Dave Kaseler, finished 11th overall with California’s Point Loma High School taking the trophy for the third year in a row.

In the bronze division on Sunday, the team competed well, winning three out of six races.

“It was great to see the caliber of the teams from the schools representing the 12 districts of ISSA,” said Susie Kaseler.

“The Baker Regatta, as usual, provided an excellent visual demonstration of the moves and plays inherent in the sport of team racing for those waiting their turn in the boats or observing the racing,” she added. “I could literally see our kids growing in skill as they progressed through their rotation and was glad that they were able to have the experience of competing at the national level.”
