BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge High School sailing team hosted the second North West Interscholastic Sailing Association regatta of the season Saturday, March 14, which saw 16 teams competing from 10 schools — three from as far away as Portland, Oregon — at the Eagle Harbor course in the district qualifier.

Bainbridge teams finished first, second, sixth and seventh in the regatta.

The BHS Blades with Stasi Burzycki, Sophia Kasper, Nicole Sanford, Will Brown and Nick Dresel placed first in Division A, and first in Division B to take the win.

BHS Gold finished second and included sailors Blake Bentzen, Kat Smith, Olivia Mitchell, Quinn Ring and Caelan Juckniess.

BHS Booms finished sixth and was represented by sailors Jackson McCoy, Sophie Crandall, Karl Anderson, Hannah Harrison and Christophe Webber.

Seventh place was earned by BHS Blue; sailors were Lucas Burzycki, Harry Saliba, Elizabeth Rolfes, and Francine Brownell.

Each school’s team has a boat with a skipper and crew in the A fleet and a boat with a skipper and crew in the B fleet.

The Bainbridge Sailing Team qualified all four of its teams for the gold fleet at the district-wide combined regatta at Sail Sand Point in Seattle to be held this weekend.

Racing started at 10:40 a.m. and progressed until the last warning at 4:55 p.m. with seven races in each division.

The sailors enjoyed a few sun breaks as the predicted steady rain did not materialize. However, the regatta did not lack for wind, and the puffy conditions led to some exciting racing.

The wind was in the mid teens, oscillating 30 to 40 degrees once the southerly wind prevailed, with gusts to 25 knots that caused a number of capsizes through the middle of the day.

Co-captain Will Brown said he was impressed at how well the new sailors filled in for the upperclassmen, several of whom had to miss the early part of the regatta due to the SAT test.
