BAINBRIDGE – Roosevelt sure gave the Spartans a rough ride in girls swimming and diving late last week.
The Rough Riders won seven of 11 races in the Metro League meet, but Bainbridge escaped with a 94-86 win after the clutch finish of the Spartan relay team in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The fantastic foursome of Hannah Tonsmann, Erin Miller, Lauren Witty and Carina Laukaitis swam to first place in 3:51.13 to take first and win the final race of the meeting. Winning the final event with just over 5 seconds to spare gave the Spartans the needed eight points to overtake Roosevelt.
Bainbridge took its other firsts in only the 200-yard freestyle (Tonsmann, 2:01.43); the 200-yard individual medley (Moorea Eldon-Everts, 2:22.68); 1-meter diving (Jackie Helmers, score of 174.40); and the 200-yard freestyle relay (Laukaitis, Hannah Lee, Eldon-Everts and Tonsmann, 1:48.00).
Still, the Spartans stayed close in the meet by racking up points for second and third places in the 200-yard medley relay, the 500-yard freestyle, the 100-yard backstroke, and the 100-yard breaststroke.
Bainbridge travels to Seattle for its next meet Friday, Sept. 23 against Garfield.
