Bainbridge High School’s girls volleyball team struggled in its first matchup of the season against Gig Harbor, being swept in three sets Sept. 5.

The teams battled in the first set, going toe-to-toe before Gig Harbor won 25-19.

“Bainbridge has a young team with several sophomores and a freshman,” BHS coach Andy Stephens said. “I think it might have been first-game jitters that got the better of us.”

Although the Spartan offense went downhill from there, Stephens was pleased with his young squad. He praised his front line of Holley McFadden, Maia Greiwe and Rollins Anderson. They “were swinging and getting their shots with 12 kills as a team.”

Emma Pendelton led the defense with 11 digs.

Despite battling at the net, the Spartans dropped the second set 25-16. The Spartans tried to respond but fell short, losing 25-12 to end the night.

“I would have liked to get the ‘W’ but I saw a lot of good things to build on as we enter league play,” Stephens said.
