SEATTLE – The Spartans picked up right where they left off last year in girls swimming, with four Bainbridge swimmers qualifying during the team’s first meet of the year for the state 3A championships.
Bainbridge beat Eastside Catholic late last week, 137-44, during the team’s season debut against the Crusaders at Helene Madison Pool in Seattle.
Ani Duni won the 100-yard breaststroke and had a state-qualifying time of 1:09.74. (The state-qualifying mark is 1:10.30.)
Bainbridge nabbed the top three spots in that race, with Spartans Melinda Carr (1:15.02) and Shea Schardein (1:25.73) placing second and third, respectively.
Bainbridge started the meet with a state-qualifying win in the 200-yard medley relay.
The team of Allison Murphy, Ani Duni, Amanda Comeau and Candice Rosen placed first in 1:53.60 — well in front of the 1:57.00 mark needed to advance to the state championships in the 200 medley.
The Spartans easily swamped the Crusaders in the Sept. 11 meet, with Bainbridge taking first in each of 12 events.
Bainbridge also fared well Saturday in the first Champions Invitational held in Moses Lake.
The Spartans placed third in an invitational that included the top five finishers at the state meet in the 4A, 3A and 2A classifications.
Rosen qualified for the state meet with an outstanding performance in the 100-yard butterfly.
She placed third in the race — behind Jessica Wierzbicki of Wenatchee High and Elisa Fang of Newport — with a time of 1:00.34. (The state-qualifying mark for 3A swimmers is 1:00.70.)
The Spartan 400-yard freestyle relay team of Carina Laukaitis, Hannah Tonnsman, Lauren Witty and Rosen also punched their ticket to state.
The team finished third, trailing Wenatchee and Newport, and finished in 3:49.52. (The state-qualifying 3A mark for the event is 3:51.90.)
Bainbridge is scheduled to square off against Roosevelt Friday at Evans Pool in Green Lake, before returning home Saturday to host the 30th annual Spartan Relays at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center. The meet starts at 1 p.m.
