Come Saturday, Bainbridge Islanders face a daunting dilemma.
Spend the day making Puget Sound a better place for people and all living things? Or how about looking to the future, and ensuring that Bainbridge Island retains its character, charm and quality of life for the next two decades?
Or how about tackling that tough topic of increased taxes, courtesy of Kitsap Transit?
This Saturday is shaking out to be another one of those familiar Bainbridge days where residents face a competing trio of choices. Three big civic events are planned and, unfortunately, they overlap, so residents will have to choose from among three worthy ways to spend part of their day.
First up, starting at 10 a.m. Sept. 17, it’s the kickoff of the first-ever island-wide beach cleanup.
Volunteers will scour the coastline of the island picking up trash and debris. Organized by Sustainable Bainbridge, the project is part of an international effort to scrub our beaches of harmful trash that’s deadly to marine life. Also Saturday morning is the start of the review of the city’s revised comprehensive plan, the expansive policy document that will guide growth and development during the next 20 years.
An open house to explain the updated plan starts at 10 a.m. at city hall, and will be followed by a public hearing that starts at 11:30 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m.
Also at 11:30 a.m., officials from Kitsap Transit will host a meeting on the island to talk about the agency’s proposal for a fast ferry from the Kitsap Peninsula that would help folks get to Seattle without taking their cars.
The proposal — which requires a voter-approved sales tax increase to fully fund — is on the General Election ballot in November, and Kitsap Transit officials will meet with islanders at the Bainbridge Public Library on Saturday to give details about the fast ferry plan.
So take your pick, but no matter what you choose, your involvement will help shape life on Bainbridge and beyond for the better.
