Lucille A. Galbraith

June 1, 1917 – January 8, 2012

Lucille A. Galbraith, born June 1st, 1917 in New York, passed away peacefully at the age of 94, on January 8th, 2012, in Seattle.

She had great energy most of her years, and made many friends in all walks of life. She was married after WWII to Robert A. Galbraith of Washington, and they lived first in Alaska, after which they spent some time in California before moving to Washington. Most of her life she spent on Bainbridge Island.

She was a great reader, especially of history and literature of all periods. Her other interests included antiques, music, art, theater and film. She collected antiques for a number of years. She was also very fond of cats, and had them as companions through most of her life.

While on the island she worked at Shorey’s Book Store, a famous dealer in rare books in Seattle, at a local law office, with the Bainbridge Historical Society, the Seattle Museum of History and Industry, the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community, where she had many good friends, and the Winslow senior center, for which the Lutheran Church gave her recognition.

At the age of 60 she entered the University of Washington and received a B.A. studying history, literature and library sciences, which brought her recognition from a Women’s alumni organization. She was named Bainbridge Island Citizen of the Year in 1993 by the Kiwanis.

She is survived by her daughter and son, Forest and Robert, daughter-in-law Elaine, two grandsons, and a favorite great-niece, Pamela. Her last few years were made happy and comfortable at an Adult Care Home, by the personal care of the owner, Tess Weltens, with whom she became good friends, and Tess’s cat, Mignon.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Exclusion Memorial of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community (BIJAC.org), or the Bainbridge Island Historical Society, in her name. A memorial service will be held on February 25 at 1p.m. at the Filipino American Community Hall, 7566 High School Road NE.
