Lenora Dunlap

Lenora S. Dunlap, of Bainbridge Island, died peacefully on Sept. 13, surrounded by her family. She was 88.

She was born in Nocona, Texas on April 12, 1920 to Gladys Russell Salmon and Harold “Harry” Salmon. She grew up on a ranch and spent her early years riding horses, reading and being part of the large extended Salmon family.

In the late 1920s, she and her older sister, Gwendolyn, traveled with their mother from Texas to Hollywood to study ballet for several months.

She attended Texas Christian University in the 1940s, receiving a bachelor’s degree in English.

There, she met her future husband, Wayne L. Dunlap. They were married in 1944. Because Wayne was in the service, they had a simple ceremony before Wayne went overseas.

Lenora lived and worked in New York City during the war, where she was employed at Columbia University and also studied and taught dance.

After the war, Lenora and Wayne moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where he taught music at the University of Michigan. Two children, David Wayne and Mary Beth, “Betsy,” were born in Ann Arbor.

Another child, Bruce Douglas, was born after the family moved to Plymouth, Mich., where Lenora’s husband taught in the public school system and served as conductor of the Plymouth Symphony for 25 years.

Lenora played piano and was as passionate about music as her husband was. The family lived in Vienna, Austria in 1954 and toured Italy and France in a Volkswagen convertible.

Lenora and Wayne lived in Denton, Texas during retirement. There, she continued to pursue two lifelong passions, reading and antique collecting. She loved the many collie dogs that she owned over the years, and she enjoyed visiting her children and two grandchildren in New Mexico, Arizona and California.

Lenora’s husband died in 1988. In 2002, she moved to Bainbridge Island to be closer to her daughter and family.

She took great pleasure in visiting Winslow antique stores, thrift shops and restaurants.

She especially enjoyed sitting outside her apartment near the small garden at Winslow Manor. She gifted her family with a great sense of humor and an appreciation of all of the beauty life had to offer.

She is survived by son David Wayne Dunlap and daughter-in-law, Emily Cosby Dunlap of Napa, Calif.; daughter Mary Beth Dunlap and son-in-law Tim Tully of Bainbridge Island; and son Bruce Douglas Dunlap of Santa Fe, N.M. She is also survived by grandchildren Eli Cosby Dunlap and wife Jacquelyne Ta, and Benjamin Adam Tully.

A memorial in honor of Lenora’s life will be held at a later time.

Donations in her name may be made to the Children’s Hospital Bargain Boutique, 572 Winslow Way E., Bainbridge Island, WA 98110; or to PAWS of Bainbridge, P.O. Box 10811, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.
