Joan Cowan

Joan Cowan, age 94

      Joan Cowan (nee Reydman) died March 15 after a brief illness. She was born March 1, 1918 in Milwaukee, WI.

      She lived the last 20 years of her life on Bainbridge Island where she was active with the Evergreen Singers and Congregation Shir Hayam’s chorus. She is remembered for bringing the Klezmer-o-rama to the island along with poet W. S. Merwin.

      She is survived by her children Mark (Bainbridge Island, WA), Jon (La Crosse, WI), and David (Bainbridge Island, WA); her daughters-in-law, Ruth Cowan, Karen Cowan, Sue Steindorf, and Carol Cowan; her grandchildren Ethan, Jeremy, Katelyn, Kirsten, Hope, Joe, Ben, Elly Cowan and Brian Hurwitz, and great grandchildren Isabelle and Josh Cowan.

      She was buried near her husband Irving and daughter Claudia in Spring Hill Cemetery, Milwaukee, WI on March 19. A celebration of her life will take place at the Filipino-American Hall, 7566 NE High School Road, Bainbridge Island on April 22 at 2 PM.
