James V. Gourley

January 4, 1934 – April 6, 2011

      James V. Gourley passed away at his home. A Tacoma native, Jim graduated from Stadium High School. He attended the College of Puget Sound and earned his DDS from the UW School of Dentistry. Retiring as a Captain from the US Naval Dental Corps after 26 years of active duty, Jim was in private practice on Bainbridge Island for 20 years.

      A life-long learner and teacher, Jim completed a variety of advanced certification including an MSD, taught at UW and Northwestern U. as well as mentoring study clubs in the US and abroad. He was an invited fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists. Jim enjoyed ice skating, golfing, needlework, and carving. He was a member of his college ski team, owned and raced a Lighting class sail boat. Drawing on his woodworking skill Jim made over 800 gold foil mallets in use around the world.

      His son, James T. Gourley preceded him in death. His wife of 53 years Doris Gourley; daughter Bridget Gourley (Robert Bruce); sister Ethelwyn Hoffman and nieces and nephews survive him.

      Family and friend are invited to celebrate his life at Wing Point G&CC on May 27, 2011 at 2-4pm. Remembrances may be made to the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.
