Helga Lind

Helga Lind, long-time resident of Bainbridge Island, died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 4. She was 91.

She was born in Norway on Nov. 21, 1917, and immigrated to the United States in 1953 with her husband, Johan, and their two children, settling in Portland, Ore.

After the birth of a son the family moved to Bainbridge in 1962. The great tragedy in her life was the death of her daughter, Margaret, who succumbed to cancer at age 21.

She had an extended family on both sides of the Atlantic, and she and her husband made numerous trips back to Norway, where they retained a residence.

She loved her extensive gardens and devoted her life to the care of her family.

Her culinary skills were legend, especially Norwegian dishes.

After her husband’s death in 2007 she lived in the house he built 40 years ago until going into nursing care this past June.

She is survived by two sons; a daughter-in-law; two grandsons; a brother and sister in Norway; and numerous nieces and nephews.

At her request, a private graveside service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, she requested that contributions be made to charity.
