David Petherick

Former Bainbridge Island resident David Petherick, of Coupeville, died Feb. 25. He was 86.

He was born on July 17, 1919, in Ruston in South Kitsap and raised in the Harper area.

During World War II, he served aboard various ships as a Merchant Marine engineer.

After the war, he was superintendent of the Bainbridge Shipyard for a short time before working many years in the machine tool business.

Eventually he formed his own company, MAR-MAC, where he provided marine surveys of commercial, government and private vessels.

He enjoyed traveling and sailing his 39-foot yaw, the Mari-Mari.

He was preceded in death by Dorothy Petherick, his wife of 59 years, in 1999; and by daughter Karen Worthington in 1994.

He is survived by daughters Janna Paris of Sequim and Linda Strycharski, of Oak Harbor; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no services but at a private gathering of family and friends, his ashes were mixed with those of his wife and scattered at sea.

Rememberances can be made to the American Cancer Society.
