Christine Taylor passed away peacefully at 83 on June 6th in her home on Bainbridge Island after a 6-1/2 year battle with cancer. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and center of the universe for her entire family. Nan, as she was lovingly known by her close companions, could always be counted on to support any family project, including the college education of her children and grandchildren. No load was too heavy to lift if it was in support of her loved ones. Chris enjoyed visits from many family members and friends in the weeks before her death and was surrounded by family in her final days. Chris’s life was shaped by her support of her husband’s 34-year career as a naval officer. This took the family on several cross-country moves from Corvallis Oregon to Newport Road Island, San Diego, Monterey, Bainbridge Island, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Washington DC, Norfolk Naval Shipyard Virginia, back to Washington DC, and finally Pearl Harbor, before returning to her beloved Bainbridge Island. She made each of those transitions easy for her family and created a loving home at every stop. Chris’s creative passions were reflected in nearly every aspect of her life. Whether it was designing clothing, quilting and knitting, interior designing or landscaping, Chris worked with the total commitment of an artist. Over many years she turned several of these pursuits into businesses that she co-founded with her sister, Patty. She had this magical ability to create wonderful scratch bon appetite meals and large parties in support of her husband’s naval career. At Norfolk Naval Shipyard, the nation’s oldest and largest public shipyard, she reestablished beautiful rose gardens around the historic 1834 home she occupied as wife of the shipyard commander. She was honored by the Portsmouth Garden Club for her accomplishments. Chris was born in Seattle and raised in Medina as the daughter of a dentist and interior decorator. She displayed the lessons learned from her Mom in each of the homes she decorated, which were admired by her friends and resulted in invariable requests for help with their homes. Chris graduated from Bellevue High and attended Monterey Peninsula College and retained a life-long love of learning and current events. Chris is survived by her husband, RADM (ret) Jim Taylor, their children Susan (Jim), Richard (Renee) and Heidi (John), 6 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and brother Greg and sister Pam. She is preceded in death by parents J Arnold and Bettie Wagner and sister Pattie. She will be missed by all who knew her, but especially by her family. Donations can be made to Fred Hutch Cancer Center or Bainbridge One Call for All.
