Benjamin R. Chandler III

July 17, 1940 – January 24, 2012

Our beloved husband, father, brother and friend, Benjamin R. Chandler III, long time resident of Bainbridge Island, passed away on January 24th, 2012 after battling congestive heart failure for the last six years. Ben was born in Marshfield, OR on July 17, 1940.

In March, 2011, Ben had the courage to receive a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). He was a proud recipient and loved that he      could be part of modern medical technology.

While he spent many years in the Pulp and Paper industry as a piping designer, Ben was happiest when he was on the water or messing about in boats.

He learned to sail from his wife of 49 years, Annie. Together they shared in the joy of boating, skiing, family, shrimping and crabbing and riding his BMW motorcycle. He loved to cruise with his family and friends and especially enjoyed sailing in Desolation Sound.

Ben was known for his quick wit, fabulous sense of humor, and ability to fix just about anything. He served as Water Commissioner for 10 years for Dabob Cove Community.

Ben is survived by his wife, Anne, son, Bruce (Kristen), of Kingston, WA, daughter, Jennifer Montgomery (Duncan) of Bainbridge Island, five grandchildren, Dylan, Morgan, Shelby, Molly and Maggy, as well as his sister, Connie Chandler (Portland, OR) and brothers, Donald B. Chandler (North Bend, OR) and David W. Chandler (Hansville, WA).

A pot-luck celebration will be held February 26th from 1:30-4:00 at the Pavilion in Port Gamble.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the University of Washington Medical Center, Virginia Mason Heart Institute, Caring Bridge ( caringbridge.org ) or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
