Bainbridge Police reported the following incidents:
JUNE 17
12:45 p.m. An 11-year-old Sakai Intermediate School student reported that her bicycle had been taken from the school’s bike rack sometime during the day. The bicycle was a silver, boys-style Giant, with a black seat and a water bottle holder. The girl’s blue, white and silver Gyro helmet was also taken. No suspects.
JUNE 18
11:52 a.m. A woman reported the theft of her son’s skateboard from a Madison Avenue business. Another teen advised the victim that a group of girls had given the skateboards to another boy. The victim didn’t want to pursue criminal action but wanted the boy contacted. The skateboard was mostly white, with a smiley decal. It was valued at $125.
JUNE 19
12:39 a.m. A woman reported that her daughter had been disturbed by an encounter by a man in uniform. She said earlier that evening her daughter had pulled over in front of the Fire Station on Madison Avenue to call her mother on her cell phone and let her know she was coming home. The daughter later told her mother that after hanging up, a man in a blue uniform had suddenly tapped on her window and repeatedly asked her what she was doing there. The woman said she was concerned by the officer’s rude actions and wanted to talk to the police chief. The responding officer talked to the only other officer who had been on duty at the time, but the officer said he had not contacted anyone at the fire station. The mother was recontacted and asked if perhaps the girl had mistaken a fireman for a police officer and the woman said it was possible. She said she would discuss the incident with the police chief.
12:01 p.m. An employee of a High School Road business turned in a plastic bag containing accumulated unclaimed items from a lost-and-found. The 38 items included nine keys or key sets, three cell phones, various electronic devices, jewelry, a driver’s license, several wallets and a folding knife. The items were placed in evidence for safekeeping and letters were sent to identifiable owners.
1:19 p.m. A Bainbridge man came to the station to report himself as the victim of Internet fraud. He said he had received an email message from a “Lemmens Crane Systems” company. The email said the company needed to avoid taxes and would send him a check for $4,500, and asked him to wire back sums of $2,500 and $1,550, keeping $250 as profit. The man deposited the check in his bank account and, as directed, wired $2,500 through Western Union to an “Akwetey Elijah” in Ghana, Africa. The company’s “representative” soon emailed back demanding the $1,550 be sent. The man sent the $1,550, but then became suspicious and requested the transaction be canceled. The man’s bank advised him that the check was fraudulent, and that he would have to repay the bank for the wired money. The case was recorded.
1:58 p.m. Employees at a High School Road store detained a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of shoplifting alcohol. A store manager told police that he had seen two young boys loitering in the liquor aisle, and watched one put a $1.51 can of Sparks alcoholic beverage in his pocket. The manager confronted the boys, who dashed out a rear door of the store, setting off the building’s alarm system. The boy who had pocketed the can was detained and police were called. The boy told an officer he had swiped the beverage “because my friend told me to.” He was arrested and released to his mother.
JUNE 20
2:25 p.m. A Poulsbo man driving southbound on SR-305 near Agatewood Road said he fell asleep at the wheel and drove off the roadway, destroying a road sign and causing significant damage to his vehicle. The driver was taken to Harborview Medical Center for evaluation and was later cited by mail.
4:20 p.m. A pickup truck was backing out of a Hildebrand Lane parking space when a piece of lumber in its bed penetrated the bumper of an unattended Ford Taurus parked behind it. The pickup truck left the scene without stopping, but a passing motorist relayed a description of the truck and a license plate number to police.
JUNE 21
9:58 a.m. The rider of a Suzuki motorcycle was hospitalized after sliding to avoid a collision with an SUV on Manzanita Road. The motorcycle was rounding a sharp corner when the rider spotted the Jeep Cherokee backing out of a driveway. The rider slammed on the brakes and the motorcycle slid on its side, coming to a halt short of the Jeep. The motorcyclist was hospitalized with a broken collar bones and multiple broken ribs.
9:56 p.m. A High School Road restaurant owner reported the theft of $600 to $700 cash. He said several days earlier he had been closing the restaurant and placed the day’s receipts and cash in a drawer rather than his safe thinking he would place them in the safe in the morning. The next day the money was gone from the drawer and he was unable to locate it. There were no signs of forced entry, and the owner suspected an employee or former employee was involved. The investigation continues.
10:28 p.m. Police and fire responded to a Bainbridge home where a mother reported her son had ingested a large dose of cough medicine. The woman told responding officers that her son had taken 70 Robatussin pills. The son was sitting on some stairs appearing lethargic. He said he had taken 10 pills an hour before, but later said it had been 70 pills. He said he had received the pills from a friend but would not say the friend’s name. He was taken to a hospital for examination.
