Winslow Tomorrow manager Sandy Fischer is leaving the city to return to the private sector, the mayor’s office said Thursday.
Fischer, who has coordinated the city’s downtown revitalization project for the past three years, will take a leadership post with EDAW, the planning, architecture and urban design firm for which she worked prior to coming to the city. She was hired by the city in June 2004 to help develop an urban design strategy for downtown Winslow.
Mayor Darlene Kordonowy praised Fischer’s work.
“Sandy has done an exceptional job integrating a set of complex city projects into a cohesive action plan for our downtown,” Kordonowy in a statement. “She guided the community through a process which allowed us to identify the essential qualities that we value today and want to preserve for tomorrow. Sandy has brought phrases such as ‘Winslow Way is the centerpiece of downtown,’ ‘the town grows green,’ and ‘the town is connected to the harbor and the harbor to the town’ into everyday use, establishing a new standard for decision makers, citizens, property and business owners.”
Also in a statement, Fischer said she felt “privileged to have had the opportunity to work with the island community on this important project. I have been allowed to do good work, try new things, learn, engage the community, and meet many, many wonderful people. The plan we have created together is state of the art.”
Fischer will step down in April, and an interim director will be appointed. In the interim, the project will be managed by the Department of Planning and Community Development.
