Three people were hurt after a 1994 Dodge Caravan careened off the road just before 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 and landed in the woods just north of the Bainbridge ferry terminal.
The driver of the Dodge, a 34-year-old Bremerton man, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extracted by firefighters from the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.
Emergency responders worked for nearly 30 minutes to free the man, who was then airlifted to a Seattle hospital with serious injuries.
Two passengers in the Dodge received minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Harrison Hospital.
Police officers at Bainbridge’s nearby police station heard the crash, and police found two men coming out of the woods about 100 feet south of the Highway 305-Olympic Drive intersection when they went to investigate.
Three other people were found in the Dodge, which police found in the woods about 150 feet away from the road. Two men were standing outside the vehicle, but the driver was still in his seat, semi-conscious.
A passenger in the vehicle told police he’d noticed they were speeding, traveling about 60 mph, as they approached Winslow Way, which has a speed limit of 30 mph.
The vehicle left the road while on Olympic Drive, became airborne and struck a tree about four feet above the ground. The Dodge kept going and then went over the embankment.
The Dodge was removed from the woods and impounded.
Ferry traffic was delayed Sunday morning as the loading area at the ferry terminal was used as a landing pad by the medivac helicopter.
