Wayne Roth has prevailed with a stunning margin of victory in the race for the Central Ward seat on the Bainbridge Island City Council.

Opponent Arlene Buetow anticipated a joint Election Night party at the Treehouse Cafe Tuesday night with fellow candidates Dick Haugan and Dee McComb, who were also supported by the political action committee dubbed “Common Sense Bainbridge.”

But the party quickly turned quiet when the results showed a sweeping loss for the candidates and their supporters who had gathered in Lynwood.

The first vote count released by the Kitsap County Elections Division on Election Night put Roth in the lead with 61.4 percent of the vote.

Roth was excited by his lopsided victory.

“I’m a little incredulous, but the margin seems to be so large, I mean, it’s not even close,” Roth said.

“Well, I’m thrilled. I’m really looking forward to joining the council and the work of my colleagues,” he added. “I so enjoyed the campaign. I just had so much support from the community. That has all been so much fun.”

Buetow could not be reached for comment. A call to her cell phone went unanswered, and an employee at the Treehouse said the gathering that featured Buetow and her fellow candidates, as well as Gary Tripp, founder of Common Sense Bainbridge, was breaking up just after 9 p.m. on Election Night.

The first vote tally was 3,144-1,970 in Roth’s favor.
