No one was aboard the 59-foot-long vessel “Chickamauga” when it sank sometime early this morning while docked at the Eagle Harbor Marina on Ward Avenue Northeast.

Nearby vessels were not impacted by the vessel when it slipped beneath the waters of Eagle Harbor.

The boat’s owner was not on the scene and his exact whereabouts are unknown, according to one marina official. He is reported as being currently out of the state.

The boat was leaking fuel and oil into Eagle Harbor. The Bainbridge Island Fire Department was on the scene before 11 a.m. to deploy oil-spill booms and absorbent pads in an attempt to contain the leaking fluids.

The exact amount of fuel and oil onboard the vessel is also unknown.

Marina officials notified the Coast Guard and Department of Ecology upon discovery of the incident. They were in the progress of responding, according to Assistant Chief Luke Carpenter of the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.

The reason for the vessel’s sinking was not immediately known. Carpenter said the boat appeared to have been left unattended for some time.

The boat was built in 1915 and is made of wood.
