Candidate Dick Haugan is still clinging to hope despite last night's first vote count in the North Ward race for Bainbridge Island City Council showing a landslide win in favor of Val Tollefson.

Candidate Dick Haugan is still clinging to hope despite last night’s first vote count in the North Ward race for Bainbridge Island City Council showing a landslide win in favor of Val Tollefson.

In the first vote count released by the Kitsap County Elections Division Tuesday night, Tollefson pulled in 66.1 percent of the votes.

Haugan scraped by with just 33.8 percent.

The vote tally was 3,470-1,775.

“I just got a call that there are 6,000 more votes outstanding,” Haugan said.

“If that’s true, I’d like to wait,” he said. “That’s a dramatic number of votes if that’s really the case.”

Haugan explained that his understanding was that the first vote count represents the early voters, but the last-minute voters represent an overwhelming percentage of the final tally.
