UPDATE | Generator was cause of house fire in Port Madison

The two-alarm blaze that destroyed a home in Port Madison on Sunday was likely caused by the exhaust from a generator that set the wood siding of the house on fire, Bainbridge fire investigators said Tuesday.

Investigators with the Bainbridge Island Fire Department said the Nov. 16 fire started near a portable generator that had been turned on when power went out on Bainbridge Sunday.

The fire spread from the wood siding of the single-story home, built in 1936, into the basement, where officials said flammable and combustible materials were being stored.

The house was a total loss and is uninhabitable.

Firefighters were called to the fire in the 15000 block of Sivertson Road NE just after 9:30 a.m. Sunday after one of the residents reported hearing an explosion in the basement of the 1,300-square-foot house.

One of the homeowners was hurt during the blaze, which was fought by firefighters from Bainbridge, Poulsbo and North Kitsap, when the resident reentered the burning home in search of the family’s dog. He was taken to the hospital and treated for minor burns on the back of his neck.

Firefighters discovered the dog did not make it out of the house later on Sunday.
