A diver who was reported missing during a Saturday dive was pulled from the waters of Blakely Harbor at approximately 12:50 p.m. Monday.

The diver, a 48-year-old man, was diving near Blakely Rock on July 27 and was 10 minutes overdue to surface when he was reported missing.

Divers reportedly spotted the body later Saturday but lost track of him. The body was again discovered by recreational divers on Sunday afternoon in Blakely Harbor. The divers marked the body with a buoy and called 911.

Emergency crews were not able to retrieve the body Sunday, however.

“They were unsuccessful yesterday because of a combination of water depth and current,” said Fire Marshal Luke Carpenter.

Island police also asked the Navy for assistance Sunday, but were turned down.

“We initially tried getting a hold of (the Navy) and the folks we were talking with at the ground level were ready to go,” said Lt. Bob Day of the Bainbridge Island Police Department. “But the command structure over there said they were not going to let them play.”

Day noted that an agreement may be in the works to allow the Navy to assist local jurisdictions in such matters, but it has not yet been approved.

The effort to retrieve the body continued Monday afternoon with boats from Bainbridge Island and Seattle.
