The city of Bainbridge Island has called in a geotechnical engineer to evaluate the hillside above Rockaway Beach Road amid concerns that recent heavy rains may have put the slope above the roadway at risk.

The city of Bainbridge Island has called in a geotechnical engineer to evaluate the hillside above Rockaway Beach Road amid concerns that recent heavy rains may have put the slope above the roadway at risk.

Leaning trees and cracks have been observed in the hillside above the roadway in multiple locations, according to the city.

The city adopted load restrictions on Rockaway Beach Road on Tuesday, and Bainbridge is limiting traffic to local access only.

The road restrictions —  from Old Creosote Road South to Halls Hill Road, along with a weight restriction of 6000 lbs from 5164 to 5430 Rockaway Beach Road — will remain in place until further notice.

The area has a history of landslides. City officials said Wednesday that the current area of concern is not near the recently completed repair project on the slope below the road.
