There can be only one that can take the title of the tastiest tomato on Bainbridge. The rest? They’re just trying to ketchup.
Here’s something you can sink your teeth into; a contest to end to all arguments over the island’s top tomato. The Bainbridge Island Farmers Market will host its Tomato Taste Off on Saturday, Sept. 17, with final results set to be announced at 12:30 p.m. Local residents and farmers are urged to bring their finest cherry, heirloom and beefsteak tomatoes to the market for consideration.
The winner of each of the three categories will receive a basket filled with market treasures.
Two celebrity guest judges will select the tastiest tomatoes: Brendan McGill, the chef and proprietor of Hitchcock; and Brandon Thompson, the pizza chef of Pizzeria Bruciato.
Peter Weber, market president and owner of Farmhouse Organics said this savory staple was a favorite market spectacle.
“Our vendors always get fired up for the Tomato Taste Off,” he said.
“I think many of them are hoping our younger customers will enter their own tomatoes and win,” Weber added. “It’s just another example of how time and attention on a project can prove to be positive lessens for kids. It shows them that with a little effort, they can be as good as the best farmers around.”
Weber also announced that the market’s hugely popular zucchini race will again be held Oct. 15 on the lawn outside Bainbridge Performing Arts.
The 2016 market season continues, open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through Dec. 17 in Town Square between city hall and BPA.
