“Art is where the heart is, if the work of some talented students is anything to go by. Aspiring sculptors at Bainbridge High School are doing it for the joy – and have volunteered to give their work to the school. I had no concept – I just designed what looked cool, said artist and designer Jon Kellog.BHS art teacher Sissel Feroy said she is excited because art has never before been donated to the school. An 8-1/2-foot-tall sculpture now being created is subject to interpretation, but is sure to make an impression on any viewer. Make what you will of our work, Kellog said. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will honor the sculpture as part of the school’s spring festival later this month. The work will then be displayed in the school’s reception area, in recognition of the thousand or more hours devoted to the project so far.Eight months have passed since seniors Jon Kellog, Geza Szigethy, Mary Chernoff and Amber Blankenship began to put Kellog’s design into practice. Kellog said the emphasis is less on telling a narrative story than on fusing different forms of natural imagery. The pupils modified their plan as they went along to develop the aquatic theme of the piece, incorporating what Feroy describes as, layers of meaning.She traces the influence of Northwest art in the totem pole-like stacking of the piece, and sees the workings of the food chain in the progression of the piece from killer whale to sea salmon to eagle. The kids have done something very dramatic, she said. People will be amazed.”
