Strawberry Jam benefit set to revitalize island skatepark

Islanders are invited to come out to the Strawberry Hill Skatepark for The Strawberry Jam at noon Saturday, Aug. 5.

Islander Krush Kulesza is organizing the event, which seeks to smooth out some of the wrinkles that have formed on the park’s surface.

“Over the years of use and exposure to the elements, the skatepark has begun to show it’s age with a rougher riding surface and the various cracks and chips that come with being 16 years old,” Kulesza said.

Kulesza said the skatepark at Strawberry Hill is well-known throughout the tight-knit skateboarding community. After opening in 2001, the Strawberry Hill Skatepark was given a rare 5-star rating by Thrasher Magazine.

“The Strawberry Jam is not a contest,” Kulesza said. “[The event will be] a laid-back gathering that showcases the history of the skatepark while collecting donations to ensure that skateboarders can enjoy this park for years to come.”

Kulesza said he hoped the event would attract skateboarders and park users along with Island residents that may not know about the hidden gem on High School Road.

The Strawberry Jam will see skateboarding by people of all ages and skill levels, music and a small raffle. There will also be a barbecue and drinks available, with donations encouraged. All proceeds gathered at the event will go to future maintenance and restoration of the park.

“Whether you skate or not, this should be a great afternoon to hang out at the skatepark,” Kulesza said.
