Swimmer Lisa Dahl helped the island relay team break a world record.

Several Bainbridge Aquatic Master swimmers performed ably as members of the Pacific Northwest Aquatcs at the XI FINA World Masters Championships last week located in the Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, Calif.,

Lisa Dahl was part of the Pacific Northwest Aquatics 200 meter freestyle relay team that broke the world record by six seconds.

Dahl, Debbie Glassman, Charlotte Davis and Mary Lippold scored a time of 1:57.21 to break the record that was set just five months ago.

She was also a member of the USMS Flying Flamingos water polo team that finished third in the women’s 40 and up age group.

Dahl also finished first in the women’s 50 butterfly in the 45-49 age bracket with a meet record time of 30.55, second in the women’s 50 freestyle with a meet record time of 28.02 (just missing the world record by .26 hundreths of a second) and 13th in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 40.40.

She also finished third in the 50 backstroke in the 45-49 age category, breaking the meet record with a time of 34.21.

In the relays, Dahl was also part of the women’s 200 freestyle relay team that finished fifth in the 50-59 age category and one of several teams that broke the meet record by scoring a time of 1:50.44

Dahl was on the 200 medley relay team that placed fifth in the 50-59 age category and one of several teams that broke the meet record with a time of 2:21.10.

Bob Miller did well, placing first in the men’s 200 backstroke in the 75-79 age category with a time of 3:17.54.

He also placed second in the men’s 800 freestyle in the 75-79 age category with a time of 12:56.97 and placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:59.52.

Bernice Phillips also placed in several events, including 18th in the women’s 50 freestyle in the 75-79 age category, sixth in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 50 backstroke.

She was also part of the 200 freestyle relay team in the 70-79 age category that finished sixth with a time of 3:58.69.

Rita Belserene placed third in the women’s 200 butterfly in the 55-59 age category with a time of 3:39.35.

She also finished ninth in the 200 IM, tenth in the 100 butterfly and 18th in the the 400 freestyle.

Belserene also placed 23rd in the 55-59 category for the 3K open water race.

Brian Russell’s highest finish was 24th in the men’s 100 backstroke and in the 100 butterfly in the 45-49 age category.

He also took 25th in the 45-49 age category for the open swim.

Dennis Sawyer swam to a 30th place finish in the men’s 50 breaststroke in the 60-64 age category with a time of 42.75.

He was also part of the men’s 200 freestyle relay team that finished 18th in the 60-69 age category.

Blake Wagner was 49th in the men’s 200 freestyle in the 40-44 age category.

Jamie Whitney was 38th in the women’s 50 breaststroke in the 40-44 age category.

She was also a member of the women’s 200 meter freestyle relay team that finished 19th in the 40-49 age category and 18th in the 200 medley relay.

Jim Littlefield was 19th in the men’s 100 backstroke for the 45-49 age category.

He also finished 21st in the 50 backstroke with a time of 34.19, 22nd in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:40.57 and 20th in the open water race with a time of 48:29.

Tamara Tulou was 24th in the women’s 50 backstroke in the 30-34 age category with a time of 40.65 and 25th with a time of 1:30.40.

The fifth annual BAMfest is Oct. 14th at the BI Aquatic Center.

Warmups start at 9 a.m. with a 10 a.m. start time.

BIRC win at Green Lake

Several members of the Bainbridge Island Rowing Club took part in their first ever US Rowing Masters National Championships this weekend.

And they didn’t have to go far to do it.

Held at Green Lake in Seattle, the first time a national championship rowing meet has been held in the area since 1985, several rowers were able to overcome stiff competition to win some medals.

Nina Mitchell and Mary Madison, who won a silver ad a bronze medal at the World Masters Games in Montreal last year, took home a silver in the women’s lightweight B double sculls with a time of 3:54.89.

Mitchell and Madison also won a bronze medal in the women’s C quadruple sculls with two women from Ashland, Ore.

They finished with a time of 3:45.78.

Mitchell and Grant Dull raced together in the mixed C double sculls, but finished sixth.

Dull took home a bronze medal in the men’s E quadruple sculls as he raced with three other members of the Pisten Bully Rowing Club and scored a time of 3:18.57.

He also won a bronze medal with the Ashland Rowing Club in the men’s C quadruple sculls.

The team finished fourth to Mosman Rowing Club of Australia, but since they were not a US club, Ashland was awarded the bronze.

‘Acorns’ for island charities

Several charities, including those on Bainbridge, will get a boost thanks to a popular fundraiser.

The Acorn Classic Charity Golf Event, now four years old, is teeing off Sept. 14th at the Gold Mountain Olympic Golf Course in Bremerton.

Participants get 18 holes of golf, a cart, range balls, lunch, dinner and entry to the awards reception afterwards.

There are several prize opportunities including awards for the longest drive, closest-to-the-pin and three holes-in-one.

Each golfer will get a chance to have their foursome take a picture with Miss Washington Kristen Eddings of Poulsbo.

They will also get a picture with one of the cheerleaders from the UW Cheer Team.

Over $70,000 has been raised for local charities since the event started.

Last year $20,000 was raised and the Kitsap Community Foundation hopes to raise $25,000 this year.

“We’re just very appreciative,” said Jennifer Green, KCF executive director in a press release. “This helps us help others. Our foundation is a flexible, one-stop vehicle for assisting our donor investors in their charitable interests.

“We connect people who care with causes that matter. A lot of non-profit organizations help a lot of people in Kitsap and surrounding communities.”

Golfers have until August 31 to register for this year’s event.

Sound Rowers hold marathon

For a nominal entry fee, rowers, paddlers and pedalers can circumnavigate the island for a challenging row.

Sound Rowers is holding its 25th annual Bainbridge Island Marathon this Saturday.

Starting at Fay Bainbridge State Park, competitors can row the 26.2 mile marathon which starts at 9:30 a.m. or participate in the 12 mile half -marathon, which takes place two hours later from Fort Ward State Park.

Boats will be ferried to the start of that race.

The race is open to all rowers that can operate human powered craft, including kayaks/surskis, rowing shells with fixed or sliding seats, canoes/outrigger canoes and paddleboats.

The race is a challenge, as rowers are subject to high winds, strong currents and heavy boating traffic.

For rowers’ safety, they must carry a Coast Guard approved personal flotation device, a whistle and must be able to self rescue if capsized.

All rowers must attend an 8:45 a.m. pre-race meeting at Fay Bainbridge.

Non-Sound Rower members are welcome.

Select team take home soccer cup

The Bainbridge FC Girls U-11 select soccer team won the Tacoma Narrows Cup over the weekend of July 7-9.

The “Tsunami” defeated the Goalstars 3-0 on Friday, as Quinn Erickson scored two goals and Charlotte Rosen put one in as well.

On Saturday, Bainbridge defeated Sparta ‘95 3-2 and South Kitsap Summer 4-1.

Danielle Bogardus, Kim Williams and Alex Bredy scored for the Tsunami, while Kawaguchi, Erickson and Kristin Bond registered the assists on the goals against Sparta ‘95, while Erickson, Alex Bredy, Rosen and Kawaguchi all scored against South Kitsap.

In the championship game against Sparta ‘95, Bainbridge blanked them by a score of 4-0.
